Carol's Story

College My first semester (fall 1985) at San Francisco State University was one of the best semesters ever. I took some advice from my oldest brother Doug. He said, "take one required class, one class in your major, and then an elective course - in some area you've never studied before to check it out." I found this formula kept my interests going, kept me inspired and helped narrow my focus on what I really loved doing and why. The BEST decision I ever made during my college career was to get an internship at a LOCAL(not union) television newsroom. There I had to opportunity to do almost everything: ...Expand for more
go out on interviews, edit videotape for broadcast, write scipts, create packages for broadcast, run the teleprompter, read from the set, produce, play assignment editor, research stories old and new, etc., etc. Many of my classmates who worked at network stations in the city, spent their entire semester either answering the phones or making coffee. They were not allowed to touch the equipment, due to union rules, etc. I think the best thing you can do when you're in college is to secure an internship doing what it is you're actually studying to become - what better way to find out if you like it or not!
